The basic characteristics of political thought in Ancient Greek, Medieval and early modern times; intensive study of the political philosophy of major political thinkers such as Plato, Aristo, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau and Marx.

PSI 314 Russian Politics And Foreign Policy (3 0 3)
The Russian Federation was one of the two superpowers during the Cold War era between 1947 and 1991. But despite the collapse of the Soviet Union, it still preserves strategic importance due to its diplomatic, military and political abilities as well as natural resources. Of course, Turkish politicians and scholars should also take into account in their foreign policy calculations Russia's policies and abilities. In this respect, PSI 314 focuses on the Russia's political structure, political culture and foreign policy. Before dealing with Russia, the students will briefly learn the political structure and foreign policy principles of the Soviet Union. The Mikhail Gorbachev's New Thinking, Glasnost and Perestroika policies will also be discussed. Basic foreign policy principles of Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin will be examined. After explaining political and administrative structures, lastly Russia's political culture (such as Dugin and Soljenitsin) will be described.

Development of modern state and its impact on the advent of democracy in different countries; transitions to democracy; process of democratization and democratic consolidation in comparative perspective.

PSI 319 Balkan Politics (3 0 3)
Balkans in historical perspective; social and cultural dynamics of the Balkan politics with special reference to post cold-war developments.

PSI 313 Bureaucracy (3 0 3)
Concept of bureaucracy; historical development of bureaucratic structures in comparative perspective; interaction between bureaucracies and political forces in democratic regimes; politicization of bureaucracy and bureaucratization of politics.

PSI 315 Comparative Politics (3 0 3)
This course is designed to show that there are other ways of running politics besides the Turkish way. Furthermore, this course will seek to understand why different countries have developed different kinds of governments, political cultures, modes of political participation, political institutions and civil-military relations.

PSI 317 Globalization and The Post-Modern Condition (3 0 3)
Concept of globalization; contending paradigms of globalization; globalization and its impact on political developments; debates about modernity and post-modernity.

PSI 322 Environmental Politics (3 0 3)
Contemporary issues affecting the global environment; pollution, the deforestation, diminishing resources, energy conservation, alternative sources of energy, recycling; political dimensions of protection of environment.

PSI 324 Culture and Politics (3 0 3)
Contending approaches to the concept of culture; cultural explanations of politics and its relevance; the role of culture in determining the political domain.

Formats of diplomatic correspondence; the different forms of correspondence between governments and practical experiences in writing text on topical subjects with the diplomatic language.

PSI 414 Politics in the Third World (3 0 3)
The idea of the third world; theories of modernization and dependency; key aspects of the political systems and processes in the third world with special reference to economic development and democracy.

PSI 416 Society and Culture (3 0 3)
Contending paradigms of society and culture; the centrality of culture in understanding society and politics with special emphasis on selected cases.

LAW 401 International Private Law (3 0 3)
Nationality law; rights and obligations of aliens; conflict of national laws and international procedure law; recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments; private international law and the appropriate court for legal affairs and relations with foreign elements.

PSI 427 Ottoman Diplomatic History (3 0 3)
The history of the Ottoman Empire with special emphasis on foreign and defence policies from 17th to 20th centuries.

PSI 421 Contemporary Political Issues (3 0 3)
This course aims to direct the students' attention to the analysis of current political problems by using the theoretical knowledge they acquired in other courses. This course in one sense will teach them to use their knowledge in a disciplined way. This is why it is placed to the last year of their education in the university. A parallel course aiming to achieve the same result in foreign policy analysis is offered in the second term of the fourth grade: "Contemporary Issues in World Politics." Economic, social, historical, cultural dimensions of the present problems will be discussed in this course by using the recent research and publications. It is hoped that such a course will enrich the students' perception of the current problems and will increase their ability to use the analytical tools of social sciences.

PSI 425 Military Security Organizations (3 0 3)
Study of the post-war security issues and policies; the development of major military security organisations; the impact of post-cold war developments on security issues and organisations.
