A survey of the symbolic meaning of culture; an examination of world
culture as a whole and in part as composed of various national,
ethnic, and professional subcultures; a discussion of a range of
topics involved in the definition of the concept of “culture,” such
as race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, religion, economic and
social status, history, geography, language; a discussion of the
patterns of social and intellectual development; possibilities and
limitations of institutional modes of belief and thought.

feminist movement in the 1960s to the “post-feminist” movement of
today; discussion of contemporary approaches to the gender question.

A critical study of the progress of Western thought from classical
antiquity to the present; emphasis on the changes, schools,
movements, and interactions that make up its history; relationship
between philosophy, politics, religion, aesthetics, art and
literature and their influence on each other.

A survey of the theories and ideas of political thinkers in their
historical context through representative texts; observation of
similarities and differences between structures and practices in
major political systems.

A study of the transformation of Britain from a mainly white society
into a multiethnic and multicultural one through the influx of
immigrants, chiefly from the former colonies, and the effect that
this transformation has had on the indigenous white population.

theory and criticism which have come into being since 1960 and the

etc., as reflected in English literature; impact of contemporary
Western literary and political movements and trends on English

language and race apparent in the construction of the literary
canon; the effects of political change, the erosion of literary
